AGASD McKinney-Vento Act

Dear Parent/Guardian and Student:

Are you experiencing economic hardship from being forced from your home or from running away? Are you living apart from your parents or guardians? Are you temporarily living with a friend or relatives or in a shelter or transitional home? Are you moving around a lot? Are you camping or crashing in different places some nights like cars, abandoned buildings, public spaces, or motels?

If so, McKinney-Vento Act law provides accompanied and unaccompanied youth with many rights and agencies to help grow and succeed and makes sure any youth experiencing homelessness can attend school.
Schools are often the most “normal” part of a homeless youth’s day. Albert Gallatin School District offers academics, adult and peer support, meals, basic medical and mental health services, sports, and clubs, along with other activities. Albert Gallatin can connect youth to other resources and supports available in our community to help our youth find safety and security and teach the skills they will need as adults. Many youth understand education is a way out of poverty.

The McKinney-Vento Act provides the following:

•Enrollment in school and the ability to attend classes immediately, even if you cannot produce normally required documents (such as proof of guardianship, birth certificates, immunization records, or proof of residency)

•Continue education in your school of origin even if you are staying in another school district.

•Receive transportation to your school of origin. (even if in another district )

•Receive credit for full or partial coursework satisfactorily completed while attending a prior school.

•Receive assistance from school counselors to advise, prepare, and improve their readiness for college.

•Be informed of and obtain verification of their status as an independent student for financial aid.

•Participate fully in school, including extra-curricular activities.

•Assistance in connecting with services available in the community, such as shelters, legal aid and welfare/food stamps, health and mental health care, and other services offered throughout the community.

Please contact your school district’s McKinney-Vento liaison, Mr. Jason Hutchinson or Mr. Gary Serock to inquire about available services and support and to ensure the youth is appropriately entered into the Albert Gallatin School District data system.

Sincerely,

Mr. Jason Hutchinson .
